Location History

Three different cultures (Greek, Jewish, Ottoman) have left their traces and influenced the historical core of the city. During the Roman Empire, a period of full heyday of the city, glorious buildings were built, ruins of which are still preserved (Rotonda, Arch of Galerius, the Roman Forum, the imperial palaces).

The city is famous for its numerous Byzantine churches (St. Sophia, Acheiropoiitos, Agios Dimitrios, Vlatadon Monastery, Saint David, Panagia Chalkeon etc.), the Muslim baths and the Jewish neighborhoods and synagogues.
